DUNAMAGGAN MINOR HURLERS SUCCESS STORY: The minor hurlers contested the Minor B League Final in the famous nursery for hurling, St .Kieran’s College on Saturday 3oth September last. It was a titanic battle from start to finish with Dunnamaggin just edging it at the end on a score of Dunnamaggin 1:18 St.Lachtain’s 2:11. (Picture Shows Jamie McLoughlin receiving the trophy on behalf of the team). They did not get much time to rest as the following Sunday they faced into a championship decider against Mooncoin which Dunnamaggin won by two points. The match however had to be replayed last Thursday night under lights in Piltown. The wind and mist battered the large crowd in attendance. Dunnamaggin got off to the perfect start having 1:01 on the board in the first 3 mins through a Conor Hoban point and an Eddie Dunne goal. Mooncoin  bounced right back with three points before Dunnamaggin hit four on the trot through Rory Lodge, a huge free from Harry Walsh, Darragh O'Keeffe and Conor Hoban again. but yet again Mooncoin responded with 1:02 to level the game. Dunnamaggin were playing in a solid fashion and on the stroke of half time Robbie McCauley pointed a free and Conor Hoban added one from play to send Dunnamaggin in 2 points up. Dunnamaggin 1:07 Mooncoin 1:05. Mooncoin opened the second half scoring with a point but Robbie McCauley responded with a free. This was turning out to be a real battle and any score was going to have to be well worked. As the game hit the half-way point in the second half Mooncoin had a surge which saw them score three points on the trot to put them one in front. Dunnamaggin fought back to level it with a point from Andy Hickey and Robbie McCauley added the insurance point as we headed to full time. Dunnamaggin were awarded a penalty but the Mooncoin keeper made a super save and Dunnamaggin pointed again from the resultant play to give them the victory by two points.

The Dunnamaggin Minor team contested the county semi-final against Gowran in a wet and windy Thomastown on Sunday morning last. Dunnamaggin played against the wind in the first half. Eddie Dunne scored in the opening minute but Gowran bounced back strongly with five points on the trot. Dunnamaggin were extremely competitive at this stage with Harry Walsh plucking balls out of the air as Gowran continue to press. Robbie McCauley pointed a free as we hit the halfway point to steady the ship. Then came a big break for Dunnamaggin when Harry Walsh took a clever free which eventually found Dylan Crehan who raced up the town side-line and lobby in a ball hoping for a point but it dipped suddenly to deceive the keeper and level the game. Robbie McCauley added a free to put Dunnamaggin in front but Gowran pointed from play to send the sides in level at half time. Now in the second half playing with the wind Dunnamaggin expected to let rip and although Gowran scored the opening point of the half with a free that is exactly what they did when they hit Gowran for 2:03 in 7 minutes. The first goal came from Robbie McCauley after a great ball in by Eddie Dunne. Conor Hoban immediately scored a point from play. Then Luke Fitzpatrick found himself in a great position to let fly on the ground to hit the net again. Robbie McCauley added 2 frees to further push out the lead Dunnamaggin 3:06 Gowran 0:07 with 10 minutes on the clock in the second half, a long way to go yet. Gowran got a point from a free which dipped and Harry Walsh had to be alert to tip over the post but straight away Darragh Fitzpatrick went for the point and it came off the posts and over. It all seemed to be going the Dunamaggin way. The effort and work-rate however continued despite the lead with Alex Moore, Ian Walsh and Jamie McLoughlin in mean form across the half back line no score was going to come easy for the Gowran lads, especially when Adam Fitzpatrick, Harry Walsh and Kieran Buckley were hovering up balls in the full back line. Both sides traded frees as we headed into the last 10 minutes and if possible the Dunnamaggin lads worked even harder with Darragh O'Keeffe and Dylan Crehan covering immense ground to help their team out wherever it was needed. Luke Fitzpatrick lobbed in a ball into Eddie Dunne who was continuing to cause havoc in the inside forward line and he managed to bag another goal and Harry Walsh had the final say with a well taken point. Dunnamaggin 4:09 Gowran 0:11. They now progress to the Co. Final Next weekend against Mullinavat.

The Intermediate hurlers contested the Relegation Final Replay in Nowlan Park on Saturday. It was a game that had absolutely everything from super scores, to excellent free taking, goal saves, a penalty and goals scored. It seemed as one side surged the other responded. As we headed for the full time whistle things seemed to be going Dunamaggin’s way after converting the penalty and playing well St. Lachtain's somehow managed to score a goal to put them a point in front. A converted free gave them a two point win to maintain their status and relegate Dunamaggin to the Junior Grade for 2018. The devastation was evident as the players dropped to their knees in disbelief and it was clear that they had done everything they could. Congrats to St .Lachtain's there was nothing between the sides in both games and commiserations to Dunamaggin players and all the management team and thanks to one and all for your efforts and endeavours over the season.
