U 21 HURLERS ADVANCE IN A CHAMPIONSHIP; The Dunnamaggin U21 Hurlers progressed to the South Semi-final with a narrow one point victory over Thomastown on Saturday afternoon last. In almost perfect conditions for hurling, crisp and dry, Dunnamaggin opened their account nearly immediately with a free from Eoghan Kearney. Thomastown responded immediately with a point from play before Eoghan Kearney stepped up again to slot the placed ball. Dunnamaggin had started well but the Thomastown attack seemed lively when they got possession. On one such attack the Thomastown player was brought to the ground in the square and they duly converted the penalty. John Fitzpatrick produced the perfect response with a fine pint from play but Thomastown matched it at the other end. Then Dunnamaggin hit a period of dominance with Ian Walsh, Victor Costello and Aaron Doherty holding their Half- Back line and clearing great ball. Eoghan Kearney slotted two more frees and Ronan Coffey and John Fitzpatrick put one over each to push the lead out to two points. Thomastown responded with a point of their own. Ronan Coffey and Eoghan Kearney (2F) , (Frees and accuracy of the free takers were turning out to be a big feature of this game) pushed the gap to four points. Thomastown are however a serious side and bounced right back just before the break to level matters. Eoghan Kearney did however give Dunnamaggin the narrowest of leads going in at the break with a point from play. Dunnamaggin 0:11 Thomastown 1:07.

There was no drop in intensity as the sides recommenced battle in the second half with both side giving absolutely everything in what was turning out to be a tough and fast encounter. The work rate was going be the key to whatever side was to come out of this and the Dunnamaggin lads had this in spades. Right from the off the full back line or Jack Brett, Michael Cody and Darragh O'Keeffe set the tone by not giving their markers an inch of free space. Thomastown levelled the game with a free before Eddie Dunne took a nice score from play. Thomastown then added two points through a free and play. Dunnamaggin then added two through Eoghan Kearney (F) and Ronan Coffey before Thomastown again converted a free. Which way was this ongoing game was too tight to call. It was turning out to be a ferocious battle. Jamie McLoughlin was covering ground in mid field to get the blocks in and the half backs were dropping good ball into our forwards. As the game  hit the halfway point of the second half Eoghan Kearney again slotted a free only to be matched by one for Thomastown. It was a Draw game again. The question was starting to be asked by supporters does this goes to a replay or extra time if it’s a draw? Eoghan Kearney again hits two frees as the Thomastown lads struggled to hold the intense work-rate of Dunamaggin’s half forward line of Luke Fitzgerald, John Fitzgerald and Ronan Coffey. Thomastown again were not about to give up and came down the field and levelled the game once again, just on the stroke of full time. Was there to be a winner ?, yes there was Eoghan Kearney stood up to convert yet another free to put the Dunnamaggin lads into the South Semi Final. Well done lads and management on a super game. Panel:- Harry Walsh, Jack Brett, Michael Cody, Darragh O'Keeffe, Ian Walsh, Victor Costello, Aaron Doherty, Eoghan Kearney, Jamie McLoughlin, Luke Fitzpatrick, John Fitzpatrick, Ronan Coffey, Eddie Dunne, Conor Hoban, Roy Cullen (Dylan Crehan), Eoin O'Driscoll, Sean Carroll, Jack Crehan, Alex Moore, Conor Brett, Brian Farrell. They now go on to play Ballyhale Shamrocks in the South ‘A’ Semi-final..
