DUNAMAGGAN GIRLS WIN SCHOOLS FOOTBALL FINAL: Nelson Mandela once said, “It always seems impossible until it’s done” and when, back in 2013 Dunnamaggin first fielded a girls football team, it didn’t seem possible that 3 county finals would be contested and won, and within four years, this small country parish would boast that their School Girls are in Roinn A of Primary Schools Football. And that’s just what happened....they believed and the impossible became possible.

In 2014 the Dunnamaggin School Girls won Roinn D in Football. In 2016, they went on to win Roinn C, and in 2017 they contested and were unbeaten in the Roinn B competition.

Roinn B was a depleted grade this year as a lot of teams regraded and so only 5 teams competed at this level. Dunnamaggin won each match in the play-off stages formidably. The semi-final draw saw Dunnamaggin paired against Muckalee, a strong football country! Though Dunnamaggin bet them well earlier in the season, this game was tough and tense. The Muckalee side were very strong, physical and tough. The green and yellow girls had to dig deep and to play with a ferociousness that hadn’t been needed in other games. They scraped a win and this tough test stood them in good stead going into the final against ‘town side; Bunscoil McCauley Rice.

November 29th, John Lockes, 2.00 p.m. was final day! Tom Cream and Ernest Shackleton would have found the cold conditions testing, and management had to ensure that the girls kept warm, fingers kept their blood supply and that the water bottles didn’t freeze in a Baltic Callan last Wednesday. The 24 girl Dunnamaggin panel were diligent in their preparation, their dedication to training and match attendance were commendable throughout the season. Their attitude stood them well in Callan as throngs of children from the opposition’s side marched onto the pitch, on another day or with another team this may have impacted on their concentration; but these girls had a mission and nothing would deflect them from it!

Referee Julian O'Dwyer threw the ball up at 2.00 p.m., and for the next 25 minutes a hum-dinger ensued. The play was frantic, the tackling was tough, the physicality of the game was fierce and the skill on display was superb. Dunnamaggin battled hard and were rewarded with 2 goals. At half time the Dunnamaggin side led on the scoreboard but on the field it was anyone’s game.

The opening ten minutes of the second half was electric, Callan got a few points and threatened the goal on numerous occasions, the Dunnamaggin goalie was on her game and pulled off save after save!! The backs were under pressure defending and Callan were relentless in their attack. Then, Dunnamaggin scored their third goal, and that sealed the fate of the game. Dunnamaggin marched on and at full time the score-board read: Dunnamaggin: 4:3, Callan 0:2

Captain Blaithín Holden accepted the cup and thanked Callan for a great game. She thanked John Lockes for the pitch and Julian for refereeing the game. Finally she thanked mentors Roseanne Connolly, Karina Langton & Noleen Delahunty for training the girls.

So, a new dawn has arrived for Dunnamaggin, i.e. contesting a Roinn A in 2018. For a small club, and small schools, where our team are down as far a fourth class to field, this is an amazing achievement and a marvellous accolade! This is due to the formation of the Dunnamaggin LGFC in 2015 and this in turn has churned out talent for the school's team. Well done to all schools (Dunnamaggin, Kells & Kilmoganny) and the club. A great Team Effort.

In a gripping game it actually did come down to the last puck of a ball when with Kieran’s 3 points up, CBS Thurles were awarded a penalty which went over the bar. Dunamaggin is very proud of the local lads who are bringing 5 All-Ireland medals to the parish.

PATIENCE YEILDS €90,000: Dunamaggin G.A.A. Club was allocated €90,000 for developments at its facilities in Kilmoganny. While the pitch has been used since summer 2016, the facility lacks dressing rooms but the committee, in its wisdom, decided to await its application for a grant from the Sports Capital Programme. The Field Committee of Billy Heffernan, Pat Long with Gerry Brett, William Kearney, Loraine Moore and Nicholas Flavin under the chairmanship of Matt Doran drew up the programme of work and sourced funding for the development. This funding was essential in ensuring a worthwhile grant was awarded.

The Club Executive appointed, under the chairmanship of Matt Doran a sub-committee to process the application for funding. The Committee consisted of William Mulhall, Philip Tallon, Loraine Moore, Nicholas Flavin and club chairman, Dick O’Shea. This committee submitted the grant application. Matt Doran expressed his thanks to William Mulhall and Philip Tallon especially for their work in ensuring that the application met the specific requirements of the application form.

A mixture of voluntary labour and the funding already secured should ensure that the full grant will be drawn down and the new dressing rooms should be in place in 2018 at no extra cost to the club.
