ST. LEONARD’S ARE COUNTY CHAMPIONS: St. Leonard’s N.S. 6th class boys’ team had a fantastic win in the SPAR 5 a-side soccer county finals on Friday last in Thomastown. They were the overall winners out of 32 teams in the county.

They were one of only eight teams to progress from Wednesday’s group qualifiers to the finals. They were paired against the strong opposition of a combined 5th & 6th class boys’ team also from St. Leonard’s, St. Aidan’s N.S. Kilmanagh, and Bunscoil McAuley Rice Callan They won all three of these matches.

In a hugely exciting final against St. Beacon’s Mullinavat, St. Leonard’s scored in the first minute. Mullinavat then came back, scoring a goal either side of half time. They looked to have the match won when St. Leonard’s equalised with literally the last kick of the game. This took the match to a penalty shoot-out. After the initial three penalties were taken, the sides were tied 2-2. It then went to sudden death. They were still level after the next two penalties. St. Leonard’s hit the back of the net to score their next penalty. Finally a great save from their goalkeeper sealed the win. They now progress to the Mid–Leinster finals in Portlaoise next week.

Well done to all seven on the squad who played fantastically; Cathal Buckley (captain), Noah Gilmore, Tom Kinsella (goalkeeper), Sean Lawton, Gavin McMahon, Ross O’Neill and Killian Tallon. (Photo attached of winning team wearing their medals)
