THE SACRAMENT OF CONFIRMATION will be celebrated in Dunamaggan Parish for children in 5th and 6th Classes in St. Brigid’s School, Kells, St. Leonard’s School, Dunamaggan and St. Eoghan’s School, Kilmoganny in St. Eoghan’s Church, Kilmoganny on Sunday 29th January 2012 during mass at 11.00 a.m. In all 36 children will receive the sacrament.

COMMUNITY AND VOLUNTARY GROUPS representatives from the Callan electoral area are invited to a meeting in the Droichead Family Resource Centre, Callan on Thursday next the 20th October at 8.00 p.m.. Those present will receive an update on the work of the Leader Partnership Company including the Tús Programme which provided work/training opportunities for those out of work. It is similar to the Rural Social Scheme except that those accepted on the scheme are for one year only. Also there will be an election for one person from the area to the County Community Forum to fill a vacancy.


 


MGR. PAT O’NEILL, a native of Ballintee, Dunamaggan who ministered in the diocese of Sacramento in California, U.S.A. was be laid to rest there on last Friday. A memorial mass was celebrated in St. Leonard’s Church on last Friday at 7.30 p.m. the same time as his requiem mass was celebrated in his adopted land. Mgr. Pat O’Neill was one of 13 children and he is survived by his brothers George, Tom and Dick and his sisters Maura, Margaret and Rose, numerous nieces and nephews, relatives and friends. The memorial mass in St. Leonard’s Church was celebrated by Rev. Nicholas Flavin P.P. with con-celebrants Revs. Jim Walsh, Jim Dollard, Tom Carrigan, Jim Crotty, Peter Hoyne, Liam Cassin and Willie Dalton. The readings and prayers of the faithful were read by members of his family. The local choir with organist Pascal Grace and Pamela Kennedy as soloist provide the singing and music. Details of the work of Mgr Pat O’Neill were recorded in the Kilkenny People last week. After Holy Communion Rev. Willie Dalton summarised what Mgr. Pat had written and asked him to read in Dunamaggan during a memorial mass after his death. For the Winter Olympics of 1960 he was responsible for building a church near the site of the Olympics for use by the competitors during the games. The Church won awards for its design and appeared in Time Magazine. Mgr Pat O’Neill last visit home was for his 80th birthday in 2003. May he rest in peace.


 


SEAN TREACY, RAHEEN who died during the week was laid to rest in Kilmoganny cemetery on last Saturday. He is survived by his siblings Rena, Dennis, Marian, Denise and Clare. His remains were removed from Molloy’s Funeral Home, Callan and received in St. Leonard’s Church, Dunamaggan by Rev. Nicholas Flavin P.P. Among the attendance were Cllrs. Tom Maher and Matt Doran. The mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Saturday morning by Rev. Nicholas Flavin with Rev. Leonard Forristal as con-celebrant. Members of the family read the reading and prayers of the faithful. Bikers from the county provided a guard of honour from the church to the cemetery. May he rest in peace.


 


KELLS HANDBALL CLUB: In the County 60 x 30 Intermediate Doubles Final Patrick Funchion/Diarmuid Burke (Kells) defeated Ger McGrath/Dan Breen (Kells).


The Eamonn Law Memorial Handball Tournament was held in Mullinavat over last weekend. In the Senior Doubles Patrick Funchion (Kells) teamed up with Ciaran Neary (Talbot’s Inch) where they defeated Liam Law (Mullinavat) and Paul Lambert (Wexford) but were beaten in the semi final by Nicky Reilly (O’Loughlin’s) and Johnny Brennan (Mothel). Eventual winners of the Senior Doubles were John Ryan and David King (Carlow) and in the Open Doubles Ducksy Walsh (Talbot’s Inch) and Tom Sheridan (Meath) defeated Robbie McCarthy (Westmeath) and Brian Carroll (Meath).  


In Juvenile Competitions the Joe Maxwell A Competition was held in Talbot’s Inch on Thursday 6th October and Kilkenny’s team of Eoin Brennan (Kells), Ciaran Cooney (Clogh), Marc Purcell (Clogh), Shane Dunne (Clogh), Emmet Landy (Windgap) and J.J. English (Goresbridge) beat Kilkenny’s 2nd Team of Mark Nolan (Mothel), Robert Dowling (Mothel), Roy Cullen (Kells), Dion Bourke (Mothel), John Walsh (Mullinavat) and Brian Mahon (Clogh).


Kells was represented in the Juvenile B Singles, held on Friday 7th October in various venues. In the U 12 B Singles by Dan Blanchfield and Rory Lodge, in the U 13B Singles by Brian Farrell and Jack Crehan, in the U 14 B Singles by Liam Walshe and in the U 15 B Singles by Robbie Donnelly. Well done to all participants and especially to Liam Walshe (Kells) who won out the Under 14 B 60 x 30 singles which was held in Kilfane.


 In the Intervarsities championships Michael Fennelly and Ger McGrath both from Kells club represented W.I.T in the Intervarsities 60x30 All-Ireland championships singles. Michael played Paul Holden from Kilfane and U.L in the first round and lost out 11-4, 11-8 in a great game and Ger played Fergal Collins for the second time in as many weeks. However despite another fine performance from Ger McGrath the result was the same as their All Ireland U 21 decider with Ger losing 11-6 in the 3rd game to Fergal Collins. Incidentally Fergal Collins was to win out the Open Division to complete a great year in the 60x30 for himself. Ger qualified for the Plate final and like the U 23 60x30 Nationals doubles plate final where he and Dan Breen lost out to Martin Mulkerrins/Niall O Connor, once again Martin defeated Ger to take the plate title.

A TABLE QUIZ in aid of Forth Rangers Schoolboys Soccer will be held on this Saturday night 2nd October in Shirley’s, Kells at 9.0 p.m. The entry cost is €40 per table and there are cash prizes and a raffle. Your support will be appreciated.


 


NEW ROAD SIGNAGE has been erected by Kilkenny County Council in Kilmoganny Village and on the approach roads to the village. Cllr. Matt Doran expressed his thanks to the County Council for improving the signage in the area and stated that “the new signage now give very clear directions to all road users especially to those traveling from the Carrick Road in Kilmoganny towards Newmarket and the M 9 motorway in Knocktopher and on the destinations from the link roads.” He also thanked the County Council for the provision of speed ramps outside the Primary School in Kells. He made representation to the Co. Council for such provision having been approached by parent representatives last year. He stated that “for each item of expenditure it is necessary for financial provision to be made and that it is very seldom possible to provide a solution to a problem immediately but he thanked the Council for making provision for improvements.” He went on to say that “he thanked in a special way the local engineer and staff in the Callan area for their efforts in responding to requests he makes on behalf of the public in the electoral area”.
