THE SHRUGHAWADDA PLAYERS staging of the comedy Sailor Beware was an outstanding success and played to full houses on each of its four nights. Director Michael Dowling’s casting and direction was once again superb. Caroline Doran as the domineering Mother and wife gave an outstanding performance in the leading role as Emma Hornett. Biddy Hawe as Edie Hornett played a difficult role with assurance and confidence which her native Tipperary lacked last September. Melissa Enright as the inquisitive and know-all neighbor, Mrs. Lack, who not only expected to be the first to be served tea on every visit but also wanted to know all the goings-on showed the range of her talent in a role totally different from her previous ones. Willie Kearney and Henry Hornett and husband of Emma played the role of the obedient husband superbly while yet having his independence with his ferrets and the occasional over indulgence. David Au Doire as Albert Tufnell the son-in-law to be, gave a classic performance of the sailor home from the sea and his performance on the final night was superb as he live up to the saying The Show Must Go On as he received news that he was a father just before he went on stage. He has spent the afternoon in the hospital but the baby choose its time of arrival when he had traveled to Kilmoganny for the drama. His performance was top class and equal to the best of any professional thespian in similar circumstances. Séan Byrne as Cornaustie Bligh was making his debut with the Shrughawadda players performed like a veteran and held his Scottish accent throughout. Loraine Moore as Daphne Pink, Emma’s niece and the bridesmaid performed exquisitely in her flirtatious role. Aoife O’Neill, as Shirley Hornett, the bride to be superbly showed a multitude of emotions as the occasion required. Peter Dunne as the Rev. Oliver Puterfoy, while have a much smaller role that in his last appearance, again showed the diversity of his talents with a top class performance.

Great thanks is also due to Stage manager, Alycia Kearney, Jackie Kenneally, Marie Kelly and Rubert Brew for their work both back stage and from of house. The set design was once again superbly done by Sheila Wood and the set was built by Ken Wood, Willie Kearney, Joe O’Shea, Eamonn Kennedy, Anthony Kearney and Peter Dunne.

This was the 9th performance by the Shrughawadda Players who once again under the direction of Michael Dowling have revealed the quality of acting talent in a local area. Their first performance took place in early 2006. Their next stage presentation is awaited with great expectations. All involved deserve a great thank you for the valued high caliber entertainment they provide.
