A PARISH MEETING OF PARISHIONERS was held in St. Eoghan’s Centre, Kilmoganny on last Tuesday. The Chairperson, Ned Kirwan, welcomed all to the meeting and gave a brief and comprehensive review of the activities of the Parish Pastoral Council of Dunamaggan during the past three years. Among the activities in which it was involved included the revival of the Corpus Christi Procession in Dunamaggan, the organizing of a very successful Parish Mission, the organizing of the very successful visit to the parish of the Eucharistic Congress Bell and the liturgy associated with the visit, the holding of Christmas Carols in Kilmoganny. He further stated that Child Protection is an item on the agenda of each meeting. He then invited the secretary, Pascal Grace to give his report. In addition to giving a comprehensive report on many of the above topics he also stressed the value of the involvement of the Parish Pastoral Council in the Ossory Southern Deanery pastoral Conference. This body has representatives of 14 parishes in the Diocese and it meets monthly. The exchange of information between the various parishes is a source of support and benefit, he stated. He also stated that the bishop was in the process of consulting parish pastoral councils re the future planning in the diocese.  Parish Priest, Rev. Nicholas Flavin in his address focused on future developments within the diocese and how they may impact on the parish in the future. He stated the following: (1) The population of the 4 largest parishes in the Diocese almost equals the population of the 20 least populated parishes; (2) In less than 10 years there will be 10 fewer priests under 75 than the number of parishes (42) in the diocese; (3) Changes to cater for the future in the diocese will commence this summer; (4) The bishop is consulting with priests and parish councils; (5) When changes do occur the obvious impact will be on a reduction of week-end masses in Parishes and a possible greater reduction during the time when priests are on holidays; (6) If and when changes impact on Dunamaggan parish a meeting of parishioners will be held. (7) If there was one vocation to the priesthood in each parish every 40 years then the diocese would have at least 40 priests serving in the diocese. Hence the encouragement of priestly vocations is very important. The Chairperson, Ned Kirwan invited comments from the attendance and an informative discussion followed.
