RE-OPENING OF KELLS SCHOOL: The official reopening of St. Brigid’s School, Kells took place on Friday 30th March. The non class room section of the school was demolished and replaced with a new and modern building. The building was designed by Brendan Moore, Kilmoganny, and the main contractor was Michael Carroll, Dunamaggan. During the renovations which began last November and continued until mid-February the children were accommodated in the Parish Hall and the Childcare centre. School principal, Josie Molloy, expressed her thanks and gratitude to both the Hall Committee, the Kells Scouts, and the Child Care Committee and the HSE for faciliting the school during the renovations. Local T.D. John Paul Phelan, who preformed the official opening spoke eloquently of the value of small schools to a community. John McGuinness T.D also spoke of the importance of a school in a local community and that a school enhances and ensures the vitality of a community. Also in attendance were Local Councilors Dr. Pat Crowley and Matt Doran. Board of Management Chairperson, Rev. Nicholas Flavin, expressed his gratitude to all who worked on the building, to the staff and parents for their co-operation during the work and to the Department of Education for its support. He also expressed his thanks to past Boards of Management for providing a reserve fund which enabled the School to proceed with the work which cost in excess of the grant available. He then proceeded to bless the building and Deputy John Paul Phelan then officially opened the refurbished school. The parents association provided refreshments to all.


 


THE ANNUAL EASTER SUNDAY PARADE in honor of Pat Walsh and his comrades took place in Dunamaggan on last Sunday. The parade which commenced in 1950 has been held as an annual event ever since. Chairman of the committee, Ned Kirwan, reminded the gathering that in four years time the parade will be celebrating the centenary of the 1916 rising. He asked the assembled gathering for ideas as to how this celebration should be organized. He added that planning for the event will need to begin soon. The main speaker at the event was Eilish Holden. The text of her address will be published in the future. Among the attendance were Cllrs. Dr. pat Crowley, Tom Maher and Matt Doran. Dennis Ryan, a native of Ballytobin lead the parade and played the pipes. The Reserve defence forced under the command of local man Joe Sheridan lead the parade which also included members of the Organisation of National Ex-servicemen. The annual cabaret was held in O’Connor’s on Easter Sunday night and it had a very good attendance. The proceeds went to Dunamaggan Juvenile G.A.A. Club.

DUNAMAGGIN G.A.A. CLUB is currently preparing a 5 Year Strategic plan which will cover the following areas;1. Coaching & Games Development; 2. Club Structures & Administration; 3. Finance & Fundraising; 4. Facilities & Development; 5. Communications/PR and Culture.


A meeting will of club members and all those interested in the development of the club are invited to a meeting on this Friday 6th April at 8.00 p.m. in St. Leonard’s Hall, Dunamaggan so that all may have an input in the development of this plan. It is hoped that as many people as possible will take the opportunity to contribute their ideas to this important process in our club’s development. If you have any ideas do not hesitate to communicate them to Dunamaggan G.A.A. club. It is peoples ideas which are required at the meeting. The committee will then formulate its policy based on these ideas.


 


THE SHRUGHAWADDA PLAYERS production of John B. Keane’s Many Young Men of Twenty will be staged in St. Eoghan’s Centre, Kilmoganny from Tuesday 17th to Friday 20th April at 8.30 p.m. sharp each evening. There is a strict policy of no admission once the drama has commenced. Tickets at €10 are available from Kilmoganny P.O., 051 – 648001, P. Moran’s 051 – 648283 and Dunphy’s, 051 – 648252. On Tuesday night only there are concessions for O.A.P. at €7. A donation will be made to St. Eoghan’s School, Kilmoganny from the proceedings. Early booking is advisable for this production.


 


Kells Handball Club: Another All-Ireland title came to Kells handball club last weekend as in the Ladies Junior B Doubles All Ireland 40 x 20 Final for 2012 Marie Walshe (Kells) with her partner Rachel Hogan (Kilfane) representing Kilkenny defeated Roscommon (Aoife McDonagh/Marina Kilduff) 21-7, 21-4. This is the third successive week that All-Ireland honours have come to Kells Club.
