KILMOGANNY FIANNA FAIL CUMMAN held its AGM in St. Eoghan’s Centre Kilmoganny recently. The A.G.M was very well attended. It was addressed by Deputy John Mc Guinness and Cllr. Matt Doran. Ned Kirwan, the Chairman, welcomed all to the meeting especially guest speaker John Mc Guinness, T.D.. He thanked him for the tremendous work he is carrying out on behalf of constituents and especially in the National Interest as Chairperson of the Dáil Public Accounts Committee. He thanked Cllr. Matt Doran for the tremendous work he does in the local electoral area. Ned also said that the Kilmoganny Cumman would welcome new member who through membership of the cumman have the opportunity to help shape the party policy and thus influence developments Nationally.
Deputy McGuinness spoke on National Issues including Ireland’s Banks and the 3.1 billion euro which has to be paid in the coming year. He said families and society was crumbling under the weight of deposit guarantee and austerity in the country. He said that in the recent changes to legislation there was nothing there for families in crises but it was made much easier for banks to repossess houses. He added that the Government is accepting this as the norm and Deputy McGuinness said as a party Fianna Fáil should not accept this as it was a devastating situation, he said something had to be done to address this issue and he felt very strongly about it.
Cllr. Matt Doran spoke on various local issues including the upcoming changes in the electoral areas, he said presently Kilmoganny is included in the Callan Electoral Area which is a 4 seater electoral area. The new proposed changes, which the Minister for the Environment is introducing there will be a minimum of 6 seats in each electoral area, a reduction in the number of Councillors and the present situation in Co. Kilkenny of 5 electoral areas will be reduced to either 3 or 4 areas. This will be a radical change as each local electoral are will be much greater than at present.
Matt said, as he is the only Fianna Fáil Councillor in the Callan Electoral Area, his own work load has increased significantly but he intends to serve the people of the area with the same and greater commitment for the next 12 – 15 months, when the next Local Elections will take place. He stated that the new Local Electoral Area Boundaries were to be announced last March but will now not be announced before the end of May. He also spoke on local funding and said there will be severe cuts as for example there was a 7 million euro cut in the roads funding in Kilkenny. Kilkenny like every other Local Authority, he concluded, will have a very tough year ahead.
The election of officers was as followed, Colm Ryan, John Doyle, Joan Geraghty and Moira Hickey - Honorary Presidents; Ned Kirwan – Chairman; Caroline Doran-Secretary; Jacqueline Kenneally – Treasurer; Richard Kenneally- Youth Officer.
