KELLS SCOUTS Troop went on a day out to Dublin Zoo last Saturday 25th January.. Travelling on the day there were 72 young people of all ages from 6 to 16 as well as 14 adult members. The troop met at 8.15 a.m. at McDonough Train Station in Kilkenny and boarded the train on which a full carriage was reserved for the Scouts. All arrived at Heuston Station on time and hiked the short distance to the Zoo in the Phoenix Park. No sooner had they passed through the gate of the Zoo when the heavens opened and a heavy shower did it’s best to drench all. In true Scouting style though, the troop was well prepared with wet gear and so neither heads nor spirits were dampened by the elements. They then spent a couple of hours exploring the Zoo before convening at the Meerkat Restaurant for a satisfying lunch. Thanks to all the staff at the restaurant who looked after the troop extremely well and got them well primed for further exploration. Then it was off to the African Plains for the afternoon where the gorillas and rhinoceros were of particular interest. All gathered at the entrance to the Zoo again at 3.20 p.m. for the hike back to Heuston station and the train back to Kilkenny. The day was thoroughly enjoyed by adults and young people alike and as one parent said in a text message, “The lads had a great day. All in bed tired but happy after a great day out.” Special thanks to Sinead who’s many hours of hard work ensured that the day was safe, secure and enjoyable for all.
