DUNAMAGGIN HURLERS ON
DEVELOPMENT SQUADS:
Dunnamaggin Hurling Club had an
unprecedented, nine players involved in weekend development squad action. Ian
Walsh featured at wing forward on the prestigious U 14 A Tony Forrestal team
that won the tournament outright beating Galway in the final, Tipperary in
Semi-final and Limerick and Wexford in the group stages. Highlights of the
final were shown on TG4. Dunamaggin hurling club had three players involved in
the U 14 B Sonny Walsh team. Robbie McCauley (centre forward), Adam Fitzpatrick
(wing back) and Darragh O’Keeffe (corner forward) all played some part in
matches between Cork, Wexford and Dublin but lost out on points difference to
advance further in the competition. Robbie netted a goal in the match against
Cork.

In U 15 action were Luke Fitzpatrick (corner back) and Rory Lodge
(Wing back) on the victorious Kilkenny south squad. They disposed of Wexford North
&South, Laois and Dublin on their way to the final against Kilkenny North
which they won on a score line of 1 - 07 to 0 - 05 to receive the Micheal Foley
cup.

Victor Costello (wing back) was the Dunamaggin representative at the
U 16 tournament in Cappawhite.  Kilkenny defeated Cork, Tipperary and
Laois. They beat Wexford in the semi-final after extra time but lost out to
Dublin in the final after extra time also.

On the U 17 squad Michael Cody (centre back) and Ronan Coffey (wing
forward) played in games against Clare (where Ronan scored 2 - 03), Limerick
and were beaten by Galway by a point in the shield final. Well done to all
involved.

UNDER 14 HURLERS ADVANCE: Dunnamaggin took on Thomastown on Tuesday evening last in the
Under 14 Tier 1 championship. It turned out to be a fast paced game contested
well by both sides. Dunnamaggin started off the scoring with a point from a 65'
by Harry Walsh followed a minute later by a point from Robbie McCauley. This
lead was to be short-lived, however, when a save by Dillon Wall was met on the
rebound and the ball buried in the Dunnamaggin net. Then came a point from a
free by Harry Walsh and a point from play by Robbie McCauley. Thomastown scored
a point minutes later to level the score again (0 - 4 to 1 - 1) but within
three minutes it was Andy Hickey's turn to put the ball over the bar. Again,
Thomastown came back this time with two points, one from play and the other a
free. In the 20th minute, a run on goal by Robbie McCauley saw him being taken
down in the box and Dunnamaggin were awarded a penalty. Robbie McCauley stepped
up to the spot but the goalkeeper saved the attempt on goal. Adam Fitzpatrick
was quick to respond and retrieved the deflected ball and put it over the bar
to level the scores once again. In the 22nd minute, Dunnamaggin had
a lucky escape when a Thomastown shot at goal bounced off the upright. The
final scores of the first half came again from Robbie McCauley (free) and Harry
Walsh (65'). Half time score, Dunnamaggin 0 - 8 Thomastown 1 – 3. Thomastown
started the second half with two points to bring the sides level yet again.
But, in the 4th minute, Denis Walsh had a cracking shot at goal
deflected by the keeper but straight into the path of Robbie McCauley, who sent
it to the back of the net to put Dunnamaggin back in front. Thomastown got
another point but over the next 15 minutes Dunnamaggin came flying with point
after point, with Thomastown getting but one in the interim. Dunnamaggin's
points came from Denis Walsh (2), Robbie McCauley (3) and Ian Walsh (2).
Thomastown did score three minutes from the end with a goal but this was to be
their last score. Dunnamaggin finished the game with Robbie McCauley catching
the ball from the keeper’s puck out and driving it back over the bar. The final
score was Dunnamaggin 1 - 17 Thomastown 2 - 7 sending Dunnamaggin into the next
round of the U 14 Tier 1 championship against James Stephens.

DUNAMAGGIN U 16 TEAM LOSE
BY MINIMUM:
The Dunnamaggin U 16 team took on
Graigue Ballycallan in the quarter final of their championship in a sun
drenched but windy John Locke park on Saturday last. Taking on a physically
larger Graigue team Dunnamaggin took the game to them immediately from the
start when Ian Walsh won a free which resulted in Luke Fitzpatrick slotting the
ball over the bar. Graigue however responded immediately with one of their own.
Then came the first of what was to be eight goals in this match. Victor
Costello who was extremely busy throughout at centre back fed the ball to Rory
Lodge who sent it into the nippy Luke Fitzpatrick who spotted Conor Hoban free
and he duly rattled the net. However Graigue struck back nearly straight away
on the 12th minute when they eventually kicked the ball into the net.
Victor C Costello, Jack Crehan and the ever solid Darragh O’Keeffe were
starting to impose themselves on the game which resulted in a ball being sent
into Adam Fitzpatrick who slipped the ball over his marker and then put it into
Conor Hoban’s path and the net was rattled yet again. Ballycallan responded
with a point immediately but a Morgan Thomas free kept the advantage. Robbie
McCauley was alert in goal to avoid a comeback before half time and Adam Fitzpatrick
pointed again just before half time to send them in at the break Dunnamaggin 2
- 3 Graigue Ballycallan 1 – 3. Morgan Thomas opened the second half scoring
with a free after the ever running Luke Fitzpatrick was fouled nearly straight
from the throw in. Rory Lodge and Dara Keane were working tirelessly around the
pitch with Brian Farrell, Victor Costello and Ian Walsh mopping up lots of ball,
the game seemed to be continuing to head Dunnamaggin’s way. However, 10 minutes
in, Graigue for about 10 minutes made some positional switches and hit their
purple patch scoring two points from frees and a point from play. They then had
an excellent shot on goal blocked by Robbie McCauley only for a Graigue player
to bat it to the back of the net. They followed this up with another super
point from their nippy wing forward. They then broke inside for a 1 on 1 on the
Dunnamaggin Goalie and there was little he could do. Dunnamaggin 2 - 04 Graigue
Ballycallan 3 - 07. The Dunnamaggin lads however were not about to give in that
easy and a Roy Cullen goal from a ground shot with ten minutes remaining brought
them right back into the game. Unfortunately, the resulting puck out saw
Graigue scoring yet another goal. Victor Costello stood up and pointed to keep
the Dunna boys in it. This was followed up with another cracking Roy Cullen
goal in the top corner followed by a good point from Conor Hoban, now playing
at centre forward. This put the minimum between the teams but unfortunately
that was how it finished – heart break for the Dunnamaggin lads after a great
battle and fight back. Full Time: Dunnamaggin 4 - 06 Graigue Ballycallan 4 - 07.
