DICK O’KEEFFE: The unexpected and untimely death of Dick O’Keeffe, Kilree shocked
all who knew him when the news broke on last Monday 3rd November.
Dick, a founder member of the DKK Lotto, and a conscientious attender at the
weekly draw on Monday nights since its inception failed to arrive at draw last
Monday evening. Shortly afterwards word spread that he had died suddenly at
home as he was preparing to go to the Lotto draw. Dick is survived by his wife,
Jane, sons Richard and Michael, daughter Hannah, brothers and sisters: Brigid,
Catherine, Eamonn, Ann, Pius, Mary, Francis, James, John, Daniel, Bernie, Paula
and Anthony. He was preceded by his children Larry and Sinéad who both died in
infancy and his brother Kieran.

His remains reposed at Johnson’s Funeral Home, Kilkenny on last
Wednesday where a vast number paid their respects. His remains were removed to
St. Leonard’s Church, Dunamaggan on last Thursday for mass of Christian burial
where they were received by Rev. Nicholas Flavin P.P. who was main celebrant at
the mass with co-concelebrants Revs. William Dalton, Pat Farrell, Jim Walsh and
Larry O’Keeffe. The readings and prayers of the faithful were read by family
members. A very large attendance attended the mass and burial afterwards in
Kilmoganny Cemetery.

Dick O’Keeffe was a great family man, an active member of the
farming community, very involved in numerous activities in Dunamaggan parish
and in particular in the Kells area. His advice and genuine concern will be
sadly missed. He very much understood the importance and value of political
involvement as the process through which much could be achieved. He was a very
committed member of Fianna Fáil. Nowhere will his absence be more felt than in
his Kilree area where he was the heart beat and problem solver for the local
group water scheme. Dick was a courteous, friendly and committed to his family
and community. He will be sadly missed. May he rest in Peace.

THE VOLUNTEER MISSIONARY
MOVEMENT
which is a Lay Catholic organisation,
founded in 1969, had a representative who spoke at weekend masses in Dunamaggan
and Windgap. Sean McDermott, a native of Leitrim, and a retired second level
teacher spoke of his work in Africa and the total lack of resources in schools.
Many of the schools do not have books or what we would call qualified teachers.
Trades people and professionals are very welcome to volunteer for work in
Africa, Latin America and Asia.
