DUNAMAGGAN GIRLS WIN COUNTY FINAL: On Thursday the 27th of November the
mighty girls of Dunnamaggin went out to play a soon to be disappointed Windgap
side. As county final day bore down the necks of the ‘Dunna’ girls, the
thoughts of winning and getting promoted lurked in their minds. As the toss-up
loomed between the teams, the atmosphere was like All-Ireland Final day in
Croke Park! Windgap won the toss and opted to play from right to left. Laura
Davis, Joanna Hennig and Siobhán Brennan went in for the throw in. Windgap
scored the first point with a well taken free from Windgap’s midfielder Cliona
O’Shea. But Dunnamaggin didn’t drop the heads. It was end to end stuff with
some great defending by Isobel Johnston, Niamh Walsh, Grace McLoughlin and
Siobhan Brennan. The ball was hoofed up field by a determined Rachel Doherty.
Laura Davis then out-ran the Windgap number 5 and the break was on. She played
a neat one-two with Amy Kinsella. It came to Hannah Persse and she let fly. It
crashed against the bar, which left Windgap stunned. Before they could recover
they had to pick the ball out of their own net; Keelagh Sheridan had nipped in
and finished well. Dunnamaggin seemed to take their lead for granted. Two soft
frees brought Windgap back into the match. The score at half time Dunna 1 - 00
Windgap 0 - 02. As time ticked away, Dunna were guilty of missing chances but
nothing seemed to be getting past the four backs and Ciara Farrell in goal.
Hannah Persse scored a point, which steadied the ship before Ciara Mulhall
scored a late point. Bit by bit, Windgap’s heads dropped. Right at the end,
Windgap’s Clíona O’Shea, the number 7, made one last powerful surge. It was up
to Níamh Walsh to stop her. She did and then booted it over the end line. The
referee blew the final whistle, and the team’s coaches, Karina Langton and
Roseanne Connolly, beamed with pride. Dunnamaggin had won! It was a team effort
with a great panel of girls to accompany. The captain, Grace McLoughlin, lifted
the cup and the celebrations are still ongoing in St. Leonard’s N.S. It was a
great day for the school! Team: Ciara Farrell, Níamh Walsh, Isobel Johnston,
Grace McLoughlin, Rachel Doherty, Laura Davis, Joanna Hennig, Siobhán Brennan,
Keelagh Sheridan, Amy Kinsella, Hannah Persse, Ciara Mulhall Subs: Emma
Brennan, Shannon Wall, Emma Dunne, Charlotte Davis, Aideen Hickey, Sarah
Deegan, Katie Burke, Megan Fallon, Rachael Brennan.
