PAT LANGTON, a Clara native and formally a resident of Altimount, Kilkenny
before taking up residence in Dunamaggan in 2000 was laid to rest in his native
Clara on last Monday 9th February where a guard of Honour
accompanied his remains to his final resting place. Prayers were recited by
Rev. Bernard Costello and Rev Larry O’Keeffe accompanied by Rev. Nicholas
Flavin. Pat had been missing for about two weeks and his remains were located
in the river Nore in Kilkenny. Tributes were paid to Dunamaggan GAA, the people
of Dunamaggan, those of Clara and the Kilkenny Sub Aqua, Gardaí and all others
who assisted in the search for Pat during the two week period of his absence.
Pat was a committed follower of Dunamaggan Hurling and Clara Hurling and a
dedicated follower of Kilkenny Hurling. Dunamaggan Hurling Club formed a guard
of Honour as his remains were removed to St. Leonard’s Church in Dunamaggan on
Sunday evening where they were received by Rev. Nicholas Flavin P.P. assisted
by Rev. Bernard Costello, a cousin of Pat’s. The high esteem with which pat was
held by his adopted parish was evident from the large attendance at his removal
and at the mass of Christian Burial on Monday 9th. The mass was
celebrated by Rev. Nicholas Flavin with concelebrants Revs. Bernard Costello, Larry
O’Keeffe, Dan Bollard and Sean O’Connell. He is survived by his sister Maureen,
Brothers Michael and Jimmy, nieces and nephews, many relatives and friends.  His family members read the readings and
prayers of the faithful and presented the gifts at mass. Pat’s brother Jimmy
thanked all for their dedication and searching during the period of Pat’s
absence especially those from Dunamaggan, the Sub-Aqua, Gardaí, people of
Clara, Pius Phelan of the Kilford Arms and Eamon Langton of Langton’s. Martin
O’Shea, a neighbour of Par’s penned the following poem which he read at the
conclusion of mass.

Pat Langton

Pat in the year 2000 you did come to live here,

to Dunamaggan where you were held so dear.

You made your presence felt right from the start,

In this little village where you would win so many hearts.

Soon you would become a man of great renown,

As you began your new life in our little town.

With your talk and knowledge you soon you soon let us know,

That this was going to be the Pat Langton show.

Your interest in the parish, it quickly grew,

And soon you were a member of the hurling crew.

For water and hurlies or whatever was asked,

You never shied away from any of the tasks.

Your dart throwing skills, sure it made us all beam,

So much that they made you captain of the team.

At this honour you did show great delight,

So you arrived with a hurl on the very first night.

Your speech was to in still winning in one way and all

I believe there were cups and saucers broken off the wall.

Sure the lads couldn’t wait to get out of that door,

They said there is a mad man with a hurl inside on the floor.

But all of these men they thought a lot of you,

Everyone on that team always made you part of the crew.

As did the whole village where ever there was an event,

To know if you were coming a message was sent.

When you had the scooter you were so full of life,

From Callan to Kilkenny you would cut like a knife.

And when you couldn’t handle this motorbike any more,

Someone would always collect you at the front door.

See you were part of this village you were one of their own,

And in the local pub you were always at home.

To Myself and Biddy you were a neighbour so through,

For your chat and company we are going to miss you.

When you left this village Pat on that faithful day,

Many hearts would be broken as you went on your way.

Because now a cloud of sadness hangs over everyone,

Since we learned our old friend Pat from us has now gone.

Our sympathy goes to your family on this very sad day,

The tears of your friends are now being wiped away.

Your Mother is waiting now Pat so to her you must go,

And us that are left will forever remember the Pat Langton show.
