THE SHRUGHAWADDA PLAYERS staging of Martin McDonagh’s The
Cripple of Inishmaan
in St. Eoghan’s Centre, Kilmoganny was another
outstanding achievement. The play was once again directed by Michael Dowling
whose casting, directing and stage setting was once again of the highest
calibre. Three thespians made their debut in this play for the Shrughawadda
Players. The play commenced with veteran of the stage, Biddy Hawe as Kate, and
Claire O’Neill, who was making her debut as Eileen on stage. Both of them were
aunts of the Cripple, Billy played by Pete Dunne. Both ladies were naturals in
their roles and demonstrated their tremendous acting abilities. Pete Dunne as
Billy had a difficult role, especially in scene 7 when he was the only person
on stage for the whole scene. Once again he demonstrated his tremendous range
of acting talent with an outstanding performance. Martin O’Shea as
Johnnpateenmike, the news gatherer, was a natural in the role with a great
stage presence. Debutants Keith Fitzpatrick as Bartley and Amy Murphy as Helen
were both outstanding for such youthful thespians. Keith one of the youngest if
not the youngest person to stride the boards for the Shrughawadda Players performed
like a veteran and Amy was outstanding in every aspect of her acting, her
movements and laughter were superb. Caroline Doran as the Mammy gave a vintage
performance and Willie Kearney as the Doctor fitted the role perfectly. The
make-up was of the highest standard as was Sheila Wood’s set design who was
assisted by Ken Woods. Alycia Kearney and Jackie Kenneally once again ensured
that the stage management and co-ordination was of the highest standard. Ciaran
Moore once again ensured that the lighting was spot on and Willie Kearney must
be complimented for the set building. Thus the twelfth presentation by the
Shrughawadda Players in less than ten years built on their previous experiences
and has once again shown that they are one of the leading amateur acting
groups. They performed to full houses each evening and it is expected that
their next performance will again be of the highest quality.
