Under 12s Crowned Champions
The Under 12 team became the first team in the short history of Dunnamaggin LGFC to win
a county final with victory over a more experienced Erin’s Own in the Roinn D Final in James’
Park on Wednesday (17th) evening.  The sides had previously met in the Clara Blitz at the end
of March with the north Kilkenny girls having the upper hand that day.
The Dunnamaggin midfield trio of Laura Davis, Rachel Doherty and Órla Buckley gained
control from the throw in and found their stride in an eagerly contested encounter that was
played in very blustery conditions.
Some excellent teamwork between the forwards Ciara Mulhall, Monica Diaz and Aideen
Hickey led to a well taken goal by Hannah Persse in the first few minutes. This settled the
team and they enjoyed a period of dominance in the match.
Erin’s Own replied with a point in the second quarter reducing Dunnamaggin’s lead to 2.
This was quickly neutralised by a great point from Monica Diaz as a result of some accurate
hand passing and teamwork from the other players. This left the score at Dunnamaggin 1-2
to Erins’ Own 0-1 going into the break.
Dunnamaggin had the added bonus of playing with the wind in the second half and the
team maintained the upper hand from the outset. The Dunnamaggin half back line of Amy
Fennelly and Lauren Walsh chased and fought for every ball, while Erin’s Own found it
impossible to breach the full back line of Níamh Walsh and Isobel Johnston who made some
fine clearances. Shannon Wall was very reliable between the posts.
The team’s dominance was rewarded when a well taken point from a free increased the girls
lead going into the final quarter. The result was sealed when some great teamwork lead to a
Rachel Doherty goal. The encounter ended with a point from Erin’s Own but it was too little
too late.
The panel members that came on during the match each played their part and did all that
was asked of them. The win came as a result of the performance of the whole panel during
the league/championship campaign where each and every player represented the team at
some stage and gave it their all.
The improvement in panel of players since they began playing in March was very evident.
The players never give up attitude, teamwork and the accuracy of their hand passing and
kicking showed what can be achieved in a short period of time.
Well done girls and well done to your mentors Michelle, Colm and Jim. Keep up the good
work. Onwards and upwards…
