KELLS HANDBALL CLUB: In the All Ireland Finals on the 10th April Peter & Patrick Funchion travelled to Cappagh to play the U 21 Doubles. They were opposed by Tipperary’s Fergal Collins & Darragh Hardy. The Kells duo took the first game 21-19 in what was a close tentative affair but it was in the second game they really showed their form. Patrick was coming more into the game and Peter’s ability to find the right corner was proving the difference in the long rallies. Overall a great team performance ended with Patrick killing in the right corner to close out the game 21-12 and give the lads the All Ireland title. Well done to both on winning their second All Ireland each in 2011. On the same programme Brian Manogue (Kells) was competing in the Intermediate Doubles final with his partner Nicholas Anthony (Mullinavat) against Clare’s Diarmuid Nash and Niall Malone. Despite winning the first game 21-10 they lost the second game 21-17 and lost a gripping tiebreak that could have went either way 21-17. This marathon match lasted two and a half hours and is a great testament to all four players involved fitness levels that they provided the large crowd with this gripping action. Unfortunately for Brian this means his wait to make it to senior ranks in the small court will have to be put on hold for another year. He will be a strong contender next season again and can hopefully go one better.
In the U 21 Singles played in Garryhill on the 16th April Fergal Collins from Tipperary got one back when he defeated Patrick Funchion in the singles decider. On the same day in Crinkle Kells lady Marie Walshe and her partner Rachel Hogan were defeated in the All Ireland Ladies Junior B Doubles Final by the McMennomon twins from Mayo.
In the Irish Nationals in Wexford Town the club will be represented by Ger McGrath in the Men’s B, Dan Breen in the U 23 Singles and Pat Funchion in the G Masters Singles B. All three are wised the best of Luck.
