He further thanked the local Scouts and school children for their cleaning of the village. Special thanks were extended to John Walsh and Noel McDonald for their continual work throughout the year in keeping the village clean and tidy. He invited parish priest, Rev. Nicholas Flavin to lead those present in a decade of the rosary in remembrance of the deceased especially those who died during the past year. Special mention was made of Joe Davis, Shortalstown, Mary Moore, Dunamaggan, John O’Neill, Kilmoganny and England and Ted Townsend, Dunamaggan. In his address John Paul Phelan, T.D. noted the changes which have occurred during the past few years. He stated on a number of occasions that people have a right to be angry with what has happened. He stressed the importance of having values which are based on morality not on greed. He asked the question did Pat Walsh and those who fought for Irish Freedom die for the Ireland of today. He stated that they died to allow us to make choices. Sometimes the wrong choices may be made. In posing the question as to what we should do now he stated that anger will not sustain us but that Love will. Love of place and faith in our country is the path for the future. He stressed the importance of moral values guiding our way of life. Prosperity at any price is not the way forward but a love of place and our heritage guided by values based on morality and love of place and people is.
