FIELD DAY SUCCESS: Dunnamaggin GAA and Dunnamaggin LGFC held a field day in the club grounds on Sunday 23rd August. The weather forecast for the Sunday was anything but promising for an outdoor event a few days previously but the Saturday forecast was hopeful. The Sunday morning was cloudy but the sky lacked the appearance of rain. Once again for an outdoor event in Dunamaggan the rain stayed away until almost the conclusion of activities. The day started with the U 8 Thomas O'Shea blitz. Teams from Dunnamaggin, Piltown, Dicksboro, Carrickshock, Ballyhale, Bennettsbridge, Thomastown and John Lockes took part. Each team played three matched of 8 minutes a side. The first half was ground hurling and the second was full hurling, but no soloing. At that stage teams broke for refreshments after which the finals were played. The Dunnamaggin lads made it through to the A final against neighbours Carrickshock. After a really cracking game it was Carrickshock who were the winners and Nicky O'Shea presented the Thomas O'Shea cup to the Carrickshock mentors on behalf of the O'Shea family. By the time the hurling finals were played the field day was in full swing. Great fun was had at all the numerous stalls and games. The wheel of fortune and hurling skill games were big favourites but the best laugh was at the sponge throw particularly when some of the Juvenile mentors volunteered for their players to throw wet sponges at them. The lap challenge was a great idea and it was great to see people of all ages and fitness levels either running or walking laps of the pitch in order to see what total would be achieved. The 2000 mark was not achieved but there is always the next time. The day finished up with hugely enjoyable mothers and others football game against juvenile players, the result of which the officials are trying to decide on! A huge thank you to everyone who made the day such a success especially those who gave their time in the lead up organising it, the tea, sandwiches and cake makers, those who helped on the day, all those who sponsored or donated prizes or vouchers for stalls, raffles or bric-a-brac and especially everyone who turned up and participated on the day.
SOUTH JUNIOR HURLING FINAL: The Dunnamaggin Junior hurlers contested the south junior final against neighbours Carrickshock in Mullinavat on Saturday evening 22nd August. The first half saw both sides trade points in the early stages before Dunnamaggin edged ahead by three points before Carrickshock pulled it back to the minimum just before the half to send the sides in Dunnamaggin 0-9 Carrickshock 0-8 at half time. Dunnamaggin did open the second half scoring but Carrickshock bounced back with four unanswered points. In what was turning to be a very close well fought battle both sides continued to trade points and with 10 minutes remaining it was all square at 15 point each and with 5 minutes remaining it was still all square but a late surge from Carrickshock saw them claim the title by the slimmest of margins Dunnamaggin 0-17 Carrickshock 0-18. Well done to both sides on a great game.
