COMMUNITY GAMES SUCCESS: Congratulations to the Aghaviller team which recently won the Community Games County Final played in Johnstown. The community games team includes the parishes of Ballyhale, Dunamaggan and Aghaviller. After a solid winning performance against St Johns Parish (O’Loughlin’s Gaels) in the first match, the team were pitted against Johnstown in the second game. Johnstown had already beaten Skeogh in their first match and so this game took on the significance of the final. Johnstown played very well in the first have and but for the brilliance of Dean Mason (Ballyhale) in the Aghaviller goal, would have been out of sight by half time.  A goal for Aghaviller three quarters of the way through the first half following a great block down by Dillon Wall (Dunnamaggin) on an attempted Johnstown clearance lead to the teams going in level at half time 1 – 1 each. In the second half, Aghaviller found their rhythm and eventually pulled away for a deserved win. In the final match, Skeogh, who had been well beaten in their previous two games, really put it up to Aghaviller and again the teams went in level at the break. After some re-organising of the team, Aghaviller pulled away for a comfortable win in the second half. Great credit goes to the Aghaviller outfit who have won this county championship for the third year in a row and they now go forward to the Leinster Community Games championship. Dunnamaggin were represented by John Fitzpatrick (selector) and players Cathal Ryan, Adam Fitzpatrick, Harry Walsh, Dillon Wall, Eddie Dunne and Dylan Crehan, all of whom contributed very well on the day.

40x20 All-Irelands: Kells had four representatives in the 40x20 All-Irelands held in Wexford this year. Ger McGrath was defeated in his qualifying game. John Fitzgerald won two games before losing out in the quarter final of the Men’s Challenger grade. Pat Funchion Snr was defeated in the quarter final of his grade. Dan Breen qualified for the final of the U23 B grade where he had northern opposition. The final was held in Coolgreany in front of a large crowd. Unfortunately this time luck was not with Dan and lost out 21-10, 9-21, 9-11 in a thrilling tie break to Shane Briody of Cavan. However this bodes well for the coming years as Dan is still underage for this grade for two more years. This years 60x30 season is now under way with 5 Kells players taking part in the
Kilfane Hal Clarke Tournament. Ger McGrath, Anthony Martin, Brendan Burke, Dan Breen and Diarmuid Burke are the players competing. Games are played on a league basis with 8 groups of 4 and the top two in each grade go through to the quarter finals. The 60x30 Interclub competition kicked off in with Kells junior team playing Castlebridge (Wexford) in the Leinster quarter final in Garryhill on the 16th May. They lost out however to a strong Castlebridge team. The Junior B team
start their campaign in Mullinavat on the 19th May where they play St. Canice’s (Kilkenny) or Ballymitty (Wexford) in the Leinster quarter final.
In the Inis Moor One Wall Ger McGrath, Dan Breen and John Fitzgerald all travelled to compete
in their inaugural tournament. Ger McGrath won the Men’s B category defeating Aengus Cunningham, Barry Devlin on his way to the final when he completely dominated his opponent Frank Semple 31-4. Dan Breen was competing in the Men’s C and after defeating Ryan Seoige and Richard McNally came unstuck losing in the Semi Final 19-18. John Fitzgerald was defeated in his first round game but then upped his game winning the C Plate.
