THE KELLS RECREATION AREA was officially opened last Sunday 8th May. The MC on the day was Joe Sheridan who was the leader of the local committee which say 8 years of hard work realised in the opening of the recreational area. In his open remarks Joe outlined the development of the centre and the sources of finance such as Leader, Kilkenny, Kilkenny Co. Council and Departments. He also thanked Cllr Matt Doran for his great support and commitment to the project. In addition the Kells Cyclists raised about €30,000 for the project. He also paid tribute to the late Dick O’Keeffe who worked tirelessly for Kells and for this project during his lifetime. A special seat dedicated to Dick O’Keeffe was unveiled in the centre. The stone chair was sculptured by local artist and craftsman, Kevin Fennelly. The Recreational Area was jointly blessed by Rev. Nicholas Flavin, Rev Dan Carroll and Rev M. Hilliard. In attendance were Bobby Aylward, T.D., John McGuinness T.D. John Paul Phelan T.D., Cllr Matt Doran, Declan Rice, CEO Leader, Officials from Kilkenny Co. Council, the O’Keeffe Family and a very large number of the local community of all ages. The official cutting of the ribbon was performed by local girl Deidre O’Neill and then the young people enjoyed the facility as others chatted and enjoyed the refreshments.

DKK Lotto: The winning numbers of 2nd May were 4, 26, 30. There was no jackpot winner. The following won €30 each: Tom Mahon, Neil MacIvor, Liam, Dan & Tom, Tom Cahill and Jim McCormack. Next week’s jackpot will be €2,200. Bingo is in St. Eoghan’s Centre each Saturday night at 8.30p.m. The Jackpot is worth €130, the Pool no is worth €130 and Pete’s no is worth €330. 


FIRST COMMUNION was celebrated in St. Leonard’s Church, Dunamaggan for 23 pupils of St. Leonard’s School on last Saturday during 11.00 a.m. mass. The communicants took a very active part in the liturgy by reading the readings, prayers of the faithful and other prayers, presenting the gifts and singing and moving artistically after communion. The Church was decorated under the leadership of Ms O’Sullivan, the class teacher for the occasion. Parish Priest, Rev. Nicholas Flavin, welcomed all and thanked the parents, families and teachers for their work in preparing the children. Those who received their Frist Holy Communion were: Conor Aylward, Jake Butler, Liam Davis, Thomas Deegan, Brían Hickey, Cierán Hickey, Cormac Holden, Muireann Holden, James Kavanagh, Kate Kearney, Emma Lahart, Emma Conor Lawton, Dan MacEneaney, Sophie

JIM O’SHEA, late of Goodwinsgardens was laid to rest on Saturday last in Calvary Cemetery on Saturday last 7th May just one week after his wife Anna Patricia (Patty) was laid to rest beside him. Jim’s remains were received at St. Leonard’s Church, Dunamaggan by Rev. Jim Walsh, nephew of Jim O’Shea, accompanied by Revs. Nicholas Flavin, Lima Cassin, Liam Barron and Philip Brennan O.Carm. During the concelebrated mass members of the family presented gifts and read the readings and prayers at the mass. Jim was a member of the O’Shea family of Lismatigue and he emigrated to England shortly after his father’s death in 1961. Later he began a succesful business which his sons continue at present. He was President of the Kilkenny men’s Association in Manchester and a devoted follower of the Black & Amber. In the early 1990’s he and his wife purchased their home in Goodwinsgardens and they returned from Manchester. He is survived by his daughter Margaret and sons Jim, Des, John and Pat, his grandchildren and many relative and friends. May they both rest in peace.


 


KELLS HANDBALL CLUB: In the 2016 Leinster B Juvenile 40 x 20 championships in the Girls U 13 Singles Rachel Doherty (Kells) was runner up in the final and received her silver medal; in the Girls U 17 Singles Laura Condon (Kells) was also the runner up in the final and received her silver medal. Well done on reaching the finals. In the 60 x 30 Hardball championships in the Intermediate Singles Brendan Burke (Kells) defeated Keith Kavanagh (Wicklow) and in the Junior Doubles Diarmuid Burke/Anthony Martin (Kells) defeated Sean Murphy/Anthony Donnelly (Limerick).


 


DUNAMAGGIN PLAYERS WIN LEINSTER GOLD: Congratulations to the Dunnamaggin players who were part of the St Kieran's College team that won the Colleges Roinn A Leinster title on Friday 6th last. Played in Thomastown, St Kieran’s beat Good Counsel of Wexford in the final on a score line of 4 - 13 to 3 - 6. Harry Walsh captained the side with Alex Moore at centre forward scoring 1 - 02 from play and Kieran Buckley at corner back. .Denis Walsh and Andy Hickey were also on the panel.  (Attached picture shows 5 Dunnamaggin players who were part of the panel; Andy Hickey, Alex Moore, Kieran Buckley, Denis Walsh and Harry Walsh who captained the team.
