Dunamaggan U 8 Hurling Team had their dreams come true recently when they had the opportunity to tog out and play in Croke Park as part of the Leinster Council annual Activities Day. The team was drawn to play against Kilanerin/Ballyfad (home of Matty Forde) and took to the hallowed sod at 12 noon to play two 20 minute halves of hurling. The exchanges were evenly balanced from the off with the Dunnamaggin boys having to fight hard for possession. Kieran Buckley (whose grandfather, Jim English, captained Wexford to a League/Championship double in 1956) struck for the first of two goals midway through the first half and followed up with a second shortly before half time. In this first half, Kieran was ably supported in attack by the stylish Ger Coffey with the hard-working Gavin Cleere also to the fore. The two Walsh's, Darragh and Denis, also covered every blade of grass on the pitch to win possession for Dunnamaggin. In defence, Aidan O' Neill worked tirelessly in front of goal and the ever reliable Dylan Carroll did a great job of turning defence into attack on numerous occasions. Colin Fitzpatrick and Andy Hickey put up fierce resistance and gave the Wexford forwards plenty to think about when they were on the attack. In the second half, Jimmy O' Neill joined the defence and time and again made important blocks. Into the forwards came Conor Denny and Oisín McDermott and both created several good chances of an extra goal but were not lucky enough to finish. In the end, Dunnamaggin held out for a 2 goals to nil victory, helped in no small way by Jack O' Connell who was very solid in goal all through. The boys then followed in the steps of many famous hurlers when they proceeded to the presentation area in the Hogan Stand. There, they were pictured lifting a trophy in practice for the years to come. Helping them was ace forward Shaun O' Keeffe who was unable to play on the day due to injury. The team was well supported by family and friends who travelled up with the team. The victorious journey home was shortened with stopovers in McDonalds and Playbarn on the Naas Road.
