THE DUNAMAGGAN MINOR HURLERS took on John Lockes in the 1st round of their championship in Piltown on Tuesday evening last. In a repeat of last year’s league and County final both sides traded early points before Dunnamaggin settled and started to impress themselves on the game. A series of points from the half forward line of Luke Fitzpatrick (2) Victor Costello (4) and the every running Rory Lodge (1) set up Dunnamaggin very well as they hit the 17th minute. Morgan Thomas got in on the action then with two points from play before Callan responded with a good point from a free. Victor Costello quickly cancelled this out with a very good long range effort. Then just before half time Morgan Thomas went on a piercing run before unselfishly dispatching the ball to Roy Cullen who made no mistake rattling the net. Half Time Dunnamaggin 1:10 John Lockes 0:3.

Any Callan fight back was quickly crushed in emphatic fashion in the opening minutes of the second half when Morgan Thomas scored a good goal. This was backed up straight away by another goal by Robbie McCauley when Rory Lodge’s initial shot on goal came off the Crossbar.3:10 to 0:3 with 5 minutes on the clock in the second half. Dunnamaggin continued to play a fine brand of hurling with any progress Callan made up the pitch being easily dealt with by the hard working midfield of Jamie McLoughlin and Alex Moore and the ever efficient half back line of Jack Crehan, Ian Walsh and Darragh O’Keeffe. Dunnamaggin continued to add some fine scores with the goals coming from Rory Lodge, Luke Fitzpatrick and Victor Costello. The final score was: Dunnamaggin 5:19 John Lockes 0:04

U 14 HURLERS OVERCOME ERIN’S OWN: The U14 hurlers played the quarter final of their championship against Erin’s Own in a misty Palmerstown on Wednesday night last. Dunnamaggin got off to a great start with two good points from Denis Walsh. Comer however had a scoring threat of their own and quickly replied with three consecutive points. This however would be their only score for the remainder of the half. Dunnamaggin through some great work in the midfield by Andy Hickey and Darragh Walsh were setting the platform for Denis Walsh and Aidan O’Neill to add further scores as the half drew to a close. Comer did press and press but some heroic marking and defensive play anchored by Dylan Carroll, Shaun O’Keeffe and Joe Fitzpatrick put enough pressure on their opponents to stop any further scores. Half time Dunnamaggin 0:07 Erin’s Own 0:03

Dunnamaggin got the perfect start again in the second half when Oisin McDermott made no mistake when he rattled the net on the club house end of the grounds. This, as is often the case seemed to injected a real sense of attack into the Comer lads and they applied serious pressure on the Dunamaggin defence which eventually yielded them a goal and a point. However then came the score of the game when Darragh Walsh made some excellent ground in from midfield, passed it to the on rushing Conor Denny who, seeing he was going to be caught passed it to the unmarked Aidan O’Neil l- Back of the net! 8 minutes gone Dunnamaggin 2:07 Comer 1:04. Comer pressed again and forced a cracking point blank save from Dunnamaggin keeper Ruairai Holden who then had to be alert to the second shot, which was also snuffed out. This gave the Dunna lads great confidence. Andy Hickey then put over a very good point from long range which was followed up by a goal from Denis Walsh, a shot which was lobbed in and somehow evaded the keeper into the side netting. Oisin McDermott added another goal as we headed in to the last few minutes. Erin’s Own did press again and Ruairi Holden did have to be alert on the line but Andy Hickey had the last say when he pointed from play. Dunnamaggin 4:09 Erin’s Own 1:04. Dunnamaggin now advance to play James Stephens on Sunday 18th September at 11.00 a.m. The Venue TBC
